What is the Crypto Fear and Greed Index?

Updated April 2026 · 6 min read

The Crypto Fear & Greed Index condenses the emotional state of the entire cryptocurrency market into a single number from 0 to 100. When the crowd is panicking, it reads low. When euphoria takes over, it reads high. Smart money pays attention to both extremes.

How It Works

Originally inspired by CNN's stock market Fear & Greed Index, the crypto version was created by Alternative.me. It pulls data from six sources, each weighted differently:

Data SourceWeightWhat It Measures
Volatility25%Unusual spikes in BTC volatility vs. 30/90-day averages
Market Volume25%Current volume and momentum compared to recent history
Social Media15%Hashtag interaction rates, post sentiment on Twitter/Reddit
Surveys15%Weekly polling of crypto investors (currently paused)
BTC Dominance10%Rising dominance = fear (flight to BTC); falling = greed (risk-on alts)
Google Trends10%Search volume for Bitcoin-related queries

What Each Level Means

RangeLevelMarket Psychology
0 – 24Extreme FearCapitulation, panic selling. Historically a contrarian buy zone.
25 – 49FearUncertainty dominates. Investors are cautious but not panicking.
50NeutralMarket equilibrium. No strong bias in either direction.
51 – 74GreedOptimism rising. FOMO starts to creep in.
75 – 100Extreme GreedEuphoria. "To the moon" everywhere. Historically a warning sign.

How Traders Use It

1. Contrarian Signal

Warren Buffett's famous advice — "Be fearful when others are greedy, and greedy when others are fearful" — applies directly. When the index drops below 20, it has historically coincided with local bottoms. When it climbs above 80, corrections often follow.

2. Confirmation Tool

If your technical analysis suggests a buy setup and the index is in the Fear zone, that's additional confirmation. If technicals say buy but the index is at 90 (Extreme Greed), you might want to reduce position size or wait.

3. Risk Management

Some traders scale their position sizes inversely with greed: larger positions during fear, smaller during greed. This naturally implements buy-low, sell-high discipline without emotional decision-making.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Crypto Fear and Greed Index?
The Crypto Fear & Greed Index is a daily metric that measures overall crypto market sentiment on a scale from 0 (Extreme Fear) to 100 (Extreme Greed). It aggregates data from volatility, market volume, social media, Bitcoin dominance, and Google Trends.
How is the Fear and Greed Index calculated?
It combines six data sources: market volatility (25%), volume & momentum (25%), social media sentiment (15%), surveys (15%), Bitcoin dominance (10%), and Google Trends (10%). Each produces a sub-score that's weighted and summed into the final index value.
Should I buy when the index shows Extreme Fear?
Historically, periods of Extreme Fear have often preceded recoveries, making them potential buying opportunities. However, the index alone is not a trading signal — it should be combined with technical and fundamental analysis. Extreme Fear can persist for weeks during bear markets.
How often is the Fear and Greed Index updated?
The index is updated once per day by Alternative.me. ZenChart checks for updates every 5 minutes and displays the latest value along with a 30-day history chart.
Is the Fear and Greed Index reliable?
It's a useful supplementary tool, not a crystal ball. Its strength is quantifying crowd psychology, which is a real market force. Its weakness is that it's backward-looking. Treat it as one input among many.
